Freezing equipment with CO2 as refrigerant.

Author(s) : REINHOLDT L.

Summary

Optimization of industrial freezing equipment: spiral freezer (incl. impingement freezer), plate freezer (vertical and horizontal) and ice cream freezer, using CO2 has been performed and tested. The higher capacity indicated by the developed simulation programs were confirmed. The ice cream freezer shows even higher capacity than predicted due to the better pool boiling of CO2. The load dependent refrigerant flow pattern in the canals in the plate freezer was simulated to find the optimum canal configuration. The airflow pattern in the spiral freezer was optimized using measurements (LDV) and simulation (CFD). The tests were performed on full size equipment using a purpose built 100 kW CO2 cascade system.
