Summary
Almost 50% of the overall final energy consumption of the EU can be attributed to heat and cold generation. Providing energy for heating and cooling in a sustainable way is thus essential to reach climate targets and to minimize dependency on fossil energy sources. Heat pumps are an important technology in this regard because they are energy-efficient and utilize environmental heat. Another attractive feature of heat pumps is their capability to provide heating and cooling power simultaneously, which is required in many different applications. The purpose of this paper is to give an outline of simultaneous heating and cooling with heat pump processes and to provide a systematic overview of common system configurations. An emphasis is put on high-efficiency solutions that are based on holistic design concepts and low-exergy principles. Two practical examples are presented to illustrate the use of ground-coupled heat pumps for simultaneous heating and cooling in building applications. The paper concludes with recommendations for further research and demonstration projects which are important to accelerate the development and deployment of high-efficiency heat pump systems for simultaneous heating and cooling.
