The paper attempts to summarize the major technology that has been learned from the international AREP effort in developing alternatives for R12 and R502 that can be applied to the evaluation of alternatives for R22. An effort has been made to define the impact that possible directions will have upon the compressor and other major components in an air conditioning system. The paper points out that implementing alternatives for R22 may prove to be more difficult that implementing alternatives for R12 and R502.
