Long term replacements for R22 and R502: the next challenge.

Author(s) : POWELL R. L.

Summary

There is no simple drop-in replacement yet discovered for R22 or R502. The author describes the search, first identifying desirable characteristics and applying these to known fluids within a reasonable pressure/temperature range. A balance between flammability, toxicity and global warming is the greatest difficulty. It is possible that a mixture, possibly of near-azeotropic type, is most desirable. One such is a 19/81% mixture of the HFCs 32 and 134a. D.W.H.
