Identifying and evaluating alternatives to CFC-114 for navy shipboard chillers.
Author(s) : BARE J. C.
Type of article: Article
Summary
About 850 CFC-114 water chillers are installed in US naval ships. A program to identify an alternative refrigerant for simple retrofitting was essential. From a list of 34 promising chemicals, the hexafluoropropane isomers HFC-236ea and HFC-236fa were selected. Tests to date indicate thermodynamic properties reasonably similar to CFC-114, and toxicity, flammability and compatibility with used materials appear to be acceptable. A polyolester lubricant would be required. Additional tests such as acceptability in submarine situations may still be needed. D.W.H.
