Summary

Very popular in Japan, oxygen-absorbing bags containing iron oxide lower the oxygen content of air in tight packages down to less than 0.1% compared to 1% with other methods, and better protect food quality. Other examples are mentioned: silica-coated films which include oxygen- and water vapour barriers and which are now manufactured industrially (Céramis brand), hydrophobic films which extend the shelf life of cheese from 45 to 75 days (current tests at the University of Reims, France), sterilizing packing materials incorporating zeolite oxidative products, and totally biodegradable gluten films (Cirad-SAR in Montpellier, France). The diversification of these packaging materials is shown, together with their effiency. Y.G.
