Investigation of chlorine-free refrigerants for low-temperature supermarkets refrigeration.

Summary

In this project, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) investigated the use of HFC refrigerants in low-temperature supermarket refrigeration systems. Two display case circuits at the EPRI/Safeway test store in Menlo Park, CA, USA, designated as Systems 7 and 8, were converted to HFC refrigerants including removal and flushing of the conventional compressor oil. Testing in System 7 examined refrigerants R502, R404A, and R407A. The refrigerants tested in System 8 were R502, R507, and R407B. The testing performed showed that these new refrigerants can be retrofitted to existing refrigeration systems with, possibly, some energy savings. For new construction, savings in both energy consumption and demand can be expected.
