THE A. BEGINS WITH A SURVEY OF EARLY CONTAINER LINES AND THE METHODS OF REFRIGERATION USED. HE THEN DESCRIBES THE STANDARD CONTAINERS IN USE TODAY AND THE AIR DUCT SYSTEMS USED IN MOST SHIPS. BOTH INSULATED AND UNINSULATED HOLDS HAVE BEEN USED, THE FORMER MAINTAINING TEMPERATURE WITHIN COMPLETELY CLOSED CONTAINERS BY CONDUCTION THROUGH THE CARGO, ALTHOUGH VARIATIONS ON THIS HAVE BEEN TRIED. THE TOTAL REFRIGERATION LOAD IS ANALYSED WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE HEAT TRANSFER THROUGH VARIOUS SURFACES OF THE SHIP'S HOLD. SYSTEMS ARE DESCRIBED ALSO WHERE INTEGRAL CONTAINERS ARE USED AND THE HOLD VENTILATION PLANT MUST REMOVE UNIT CONDENSER HEAT AND HEAT FROM PRIME MOVERS. ANOTHER CASE IS CONSIDERED WITH INTEGRAL WATER-COOLED CONDENSER UNITS. REFRIGERATION LOADS ARE AFFECTED BY CONTAINER INSULATION DETERIORATION AND THIS HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED. REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS ARE DESCRIBED FOR BRINE AIR-COOLERS AND FOR DIRECT-EXPANSION HOLD COOLING E SINGLE-SCREW COMPRESSOR IS BECOMING POPULAR BECAUSE OF ITS ABILITY FOR LOW-TEMPERATURE, SINGLE STAGE-OPERATION. THE PAPER CONCLUDES WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE AUTOMATIC CONTROL AND DATA-LOGGING PROCESSES USED, ALSO METHODS OF ATMOSPHERE MODIFICATION BOTH BY GAS CONTROL AND BY MODIFYING WRAPPINGS. D.W.H.
