Mobile abattoir and refrigeration tunnel for laying hens.

Summary

Transport of laying hens from egg producers to stationary abattoirs are often linked to issues related to animal welfare. A Norwegian chicken abattoir in cooperation with SINTEF Ocean led the development for design of a mobile abattoir for production of 7000 hens per day. The mobile system will be transported to the egg producers by truck. Based on both laboratory- and industrial scale refrigeration tests, a new system for mobile (truck) refrigeration tunnel was designed, suited for directly connection with the mobile abattoir. Limited access to tap water and electrical energy at the egg producer's various production sites were important for the design of the CO2 refrigeration system. The surplus heat from the refrigeration system is utilized to produce hot water (70°C) in 800-liter tank for cleaning the mobile abattoir and preheating of hot water for scolding hens.
