Summary

Autumn treatment of naturally infected potato cv. Bintje tubers for 2 weeks at 10 deg C using the vapour phase of garlic, caraway, thyme or peppermint essential oils reduced infection by Helminthosporium solani and Rhizoctonia solani, as detected in a tuber plug test performed in spring. The sprouting ability of treated tubers was negatively influenced by garlic and peppermint (but not caraway or thyme) essential oils. In similar, small-scale experiments, performed in February, however, the latter essential oils completely inhibited tuber sprouting. Rotting, caused by artificially inoculating Bintje tubers with , was significantly reduced when tubers were exposed to the vapour phase of garlic, basil, peppermint or thyme essential oils for 13 days or more at 10 deg C.
