Summary

Some zones of Russia experience average monthly winter temperatures below -15 deg C. Ice formed in winter can be used as a cold source for water chilling in summer. Suitable buried ice stores have been developed for dairy farms of up to 400 cows. Water is cooled by sparging over ice then pumped to milk coolers. Further development is under way for stored ice as a cooling means for horticultural products. D.W.H.
