Summary

THE DROUGHT IN THE US NORTH WEST HAS DEPLETED STOCKS AS INTERNAL DEMAND HAS INCREASED, AND EXPORTERS HAD DIFFICULTIES IN MEETING EXPORT ORDERS. IMPORTS WERE ALSO LOWER BUT THIS MAY HAVE BEEN DUE TO CONDITIONS IN EXPORTING COUNTRIES. IN SOME AREAS, LARGER RETAIL PACKS ARE GROWING IN POPULARITY WHILST THE SINGLE PACKS ARE IN DECLINE. THIS TREND IS, HOWEVER, REVERSED IN OTHER AREAS. IN 1988, EUROPE WAS LARGELY SELF SUFFICIENT IN VEGETABLES, AND DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF IMPORTS INTO THE EEC. NEWS PRODUCTS IN EUROPE ARE DETAILED, AND SOME FIGURES ARE ALSO GIVEN FOR FROZEN VEGETABLES. G.R.S.
