Summary
For extensive use of low global warming potential refrigerants with low flammability, there is a need to develop a simple method to distinguish the lower flammability refrigerants from the higher flammability ones. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the applicability of the test method for flat-plate quenching distance (dq) for predicting the maximum burning velocity (Su0, max) of near 10 cm s−1. The dq measurement was carried out by the ASTM E582–07 method and the modified method for six binary blends that all have Su0, max of approximately 10 cm s−1. It was found that the standard 25-mm diameter glass plates placed in the vertical position give at most 11% smaller dq values than 50-mm diameter plates placed in the horizontal position, which was due to the upward motion by the buoyancy. Based on the thermal loss theory, a simple equation using the experimental dq was obtained to predict the Su0, max of the lower flammability blends.
