Author(s) : BOOT J. L.

Type of article: Article, IJR article

Summary

MOST DOMESTIC REFRIGERATORS AND FREEZERS USE R11 AS THE BLOWING AGENT FOR THE POLYURETHANE FOAM AND R12 IS USED AS THE REFRIGERANT. ALTERNATIVES FOR BOTH R11 AND R12 ARE PRESENTED, ALONG WITH AN OUTLINE OF THE TECHNICAL PROBLEMS THAT MUST BE SOLVED IN ORDER TO SUCCESSFULLY APPLY EACH ALTERNATIVE. SINCE TOUGH NEW PRODUCT ENERGY STANDARDS FOR PRODUCTS SOLD IN THE UNITED STATES ARE LIKELY TO BE INTRODUCED IN THE EARLY 1990S, THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF EACH ALTERNATIVE IS CLOSELY EXAMINED.
