Summary

The effects of different plastic films were compared in guava (Psidium guajava) cv. Kumagai fruits stored at 10 °C and 85-90% RH for 7, 14, 21 and 28 days, followed by 3 days at 25 °C and 70-80% RH. The packaging materials tested were: polyolephinic film with selective permeability (PPS), low-density polyethylene film with mineral incorporation, high-density polyethylene film and nylon film specially developed for vegetables. Off flavours and brown spots were observed. The PPS film showed the best results. In spite of affecting the normal ripening of the guavas, the fruits had good appearance, normal flavour and absence of decay, for up to 14 days of storage.
