Performance comparison of the hydrocarbon R290 with R22 in a residential heat-pump system.

Summary
To provide a clearer comparison, the performance potential of R290 was experimentally compared with R22 under a wide range of test conditions. From the experimental comparison of R290 with R22 using an 11% larger R290 compressor, it was found that the cooling performance of R290 approached that of R22 within 2-4%. The heating performance of R290 was up to 11% lower than R22 when the ambient temperature was higher than -20 °C. However, the heating performance of R290 exceeded that of R22 when the ambient temperature dropped below -20 °C.
