Summary
Because of similar thermodynamic properties and almost identical swept volume as R22, the zeotropic blend R407c is sometimes preferred to R22, since it is chlorine-free. However, R407C can be regarded only as a transitional substance, because of its large glide of 5.4 K, its uneven fractioning, its start-up problems due to high solubility in synthetic oil, and, especially, its much worse COP. New technical solutions using the pure refrigerant R134a will presumably replace R407C plants soon. In broadly based experiments it was shown that only through the use of plate heat exchangers can a slight increase in performance be obtained, whereas the performance of a tube bundle was 10 to 20% lower.
