Performance of a low-GWP near-azeotropic alternative to R410A.

Author(s) : COLBOURNE D., COX N., SUEN K. O., et al.

Summary

There has been a notable uptake in the use of R410A in small sized air-conditioning systems, largely due to its supposed superior efficiency compared to the other widely used HFCs. Its higher pressure also enables a more compact system design. However, R410A possesses a high GWP, and is therefore viewed negatively from an environmental perspective. The current work presents a performance study on a low-GWP alternative to R410A, which is a near-azeotropic mixture based on R1270 (propylene) and R161. The study comprises a modelling exercise and a series of measurements, in a purpose-built test rig, to compare the performance of the chosen composition of the R161/R170 mixture with R410A.
