Performance of vapour compression refrigeration system with hydrocarbons: propane, isobutane, and 50-50 mixture of propane-isobutane.

Author(s) : MATHUR G. D.

Summary

The analysis has been conducted by using propane (R290), isobutane (R600a) and 50-50 mixture (by weight) of propane and isobutane. The COP for the above hydrocarbons was calculated and compared with the R12, R134a and with Carnot cycle. The investigation indicates that the hydrocarbons can be used as substitutes for R134a. Finally, practical design considerations have been presented for the design of the refrigeration system with hydrocarbons. Details of the effect of hydrocarbon refrigerants on the lubricants, moisture, non-condensibles, thermodynamic irreversibilities, design of the heat exchangers, flammability and safety issues, materials for hoses and O-rings are also presented.
