PREDICTION OF FREEZING RATES FOR BIOLOGICAL MATERIALS ENCASED IN COPPER BLOCKS AT ULTRA-LOW TEMPERATURES.

Author(s) : MELLOR J. D., BELL G. A.

Summary

DEEP PRESERVATION OF BIOLOGICAL TISSUES BY FREEZING IS IMPORTANT FOR MORPHOLOGICAL PROPERTIES IN PHYSIOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND IT DEPENDS ON THE FREEZING RATE. MEASURING FREEZING RATE BY MEANS OF A THERMOCOUPLE IS DIFFICULT BECAUSE OF THE SIZE OF THE SAMPLE, THEREFORE A BIG SPHERICAL SAMPLE (ABOUT 3 MM DIAMETER) IS USED, BY ENCASING IT IN HOLLOWS IN A COPPER BLOCK WHEN COOLED. A MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR THE PREDICTION OF FREEZING RATE ALLOWS FOR THE EFFECT OF THERMAL DIFFUSIVITY AND ENTHALPY IN TERMS OF TEMPERATURE.
