Summary

IN 1985, JAPANESE FROZEN FOOD PRODUCTION AMOUNTED TO 778,346 TONS (UP 5.1% FROM 1984) AND 434.7 BILLION YENS (UP 6.7%). GROSS CONSUMPTION, INCLUDING IMPORTS, WAS 957,951 TONS (UP 4.3%) AND PER CAPITA CONSUMPTION WAS 7.91 KG. FROZEN FOODS FOR INSTITUTIONAL USES ARE INCREASING STEADILY DUE TO HEAVY DEMANDS FROM THE CONSUMER INDUSTRY WHILE RETAIL SALES HAVE STAGNATED, PARTLY BECAUSE OF SEVERE COMPETITION WITH CHILLED FOODS. THE RATIO OF PRODUCTION BETWEEN RETAIL AND INSTITUTIONAL USES WAS 27 TO 73 IN 1985. IN 1986, THE JAPANESE FROZEN FOOD ASSOCIATION STARTED ITS 3 YEAR CAMPAIGN FOR VITALIZING THE FROZEN FOOD MARKET. IN AMERICA, IN 1984, SALES OF FROZEN FOODS AMOUNTED TO 10.8 MILLION TONS AND 36.23 BILLION DOLLARS WHILE THE RATIO BETWEEN RETAIL AND INSTITUTIONAL USES WAS ALMOST 50 TO 50.
