BETWEEN 1979 AND 1982 FROZEN FOOD CONSUMPTION INCREASED ON AVERAGE BY 7.9% AND DURING THE PAST YEAR BY 6%. FROZEN FOOD FOR CATERING ACCOUNTED FOR 68% OF THE TOTAL OF PREPARED FOODS AND OF THIS 47.5% GOES TO RESTAURANTS AND SIMILAR ESTABLISHMENTS. RECENT IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENTS ARE IN FROZEN NOODLES, IMITATION CRAB AND OTHER SEA FOODS WHICH HAVE EXPORT POTENTIAL. A FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING SYSTEM HAS BEEN SET UP TO MAXIMISE EFFICIENCY IN THE FROZEN FOOD PROCESS, USING MICROELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGY. FROZEN FOOD IMPORTS ARE INCREASING. RETAIL SALES WHILST SLUGGISH ARE EXPECTED TO IMPROVE WITH CHANGING SOCIAL HABITS. G.R.S.
