Processing and testing of the low-temperature stage erbium(6)-nickel(2)-tin cryogenic regenerator alloy.

Summary

Low temperature heat capacity measurements have shown that erbium(6)-nickel(2)-tin might be a useful low temperature (lower than 20 K), cryocooler regenerator material. The authors report on: 1) their efforts to prepare small particles for use in Gifford-McMahon cryocoolers, and 2) the initial test results using erbium(6)-nickel(2)-tin in the low-temperature stage of a Gifford-McMahon displacer. Replacement of some of the neodymium spheres by erbium(6)-nickel(2)-tin in the second stage achieved a modest improvement in the no-load temperature of about 0.5 K over the all-neodymium second stage.
