Summary

The power consumption and related efficiency of the HVAC systems in public transport vehicles are very important. It affects the operating range, and the lack of engine waste heat makes it the only heating source available in battery powered vehicles. The CO2 refrigerant-based circuits are specific due to natural properties of the CO2 gas with a relatively low critical temperature of 31 °C. Consequently, the transcritical operation became the must resulting in the unit design complexity increase in comparison to common legacy refrigerants systems. This paper will provide the comparison overview of the simulated performance of the real CO2 HVAC single stage heat pump unit model using double expansion refrigeration circuit and the alternative simplified unit model using single expansion refrigeration circuit. The performance and efficiency are compared in both major operation modes (heating and cooling) in a wide range of operating conditions.
