Summary

Four articles question the future of refrigeration in building air-conditioning systems. Most existing large systems use central, centrifugal compressor water chillers operating with R11. Converting to R123, though cheaper than equipment replacement, is thrown in doubt by the latest toxicity findings for R123, a minimum working exposure of 10 ppm. System designers and building owners are uncertain of future strategy and complain that little has been done in the UK to make them aware of the problems. Very little existing refrigerant is reclaimed, and wastage still accounts for 80% of CFCs supplied. In contrast the Swedish government has laid down stringent regulations. Personel handling refrigerants must hold specific qualifications. For large plant servicing, the training course lasts 34 weeks. The CIBSE Commissioning Code for refrigeration has been revised, but little is said about CFC use. D.W.H.
