Summary

The author gives a brief history of refrigerant safety and summarizes current toxicity tests and results, particularly with R123 and R134a. He describes hazards other than toxicity, such as suffocation and flammability, and summarizes comparative safety tests of R123 and R11, and R134a and R12. The role of ASHRAE standards 15 and 34 in safety is also described. The article constitutes an excellent introduction to the subject for the non-specialist.
