Summary

The paper discusses the emerging substitutes for CFCs and their likely use in various areas of refrigeration and air-conditioning. Both ozone depletion and total equivalent global warming are considered, the latter including the energy required when the refrigerant is in use. Discussion covers HCFCs, blends and ammonia. Blends usually being NEARMs (near azeotropic mixtures, rather than NARMs, non-azeotropic mixtures, which cause fractionation problems). Future strategies are outlined for domestic refrigerators, commercial and industrial, stationary air-conditioning (chilled water and direct), and mobile air-conditioning. A full list of substitutes is tabulated giving ozone depletion and global warming factors, flammability, toxicity, present and future costs, and availability. A further appendix carries advice for developing countries both for self consumption of products and for export manufacture. D.W.H.
