Summary

The refrigeration and air-conditioning sector, which consumes almost 15% of global energy, has direct and indirect detrimental effects on the environment via CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions. The 15% figure can only be expected to rise given the increasing global demand in refrigeration, for food-safety purposes or to respond to daily essential needs (medical and pharmaceutical industries) or for our comfort (air conditioning). How can we respond to this demand while using less pollutants? This is the issue that many researchers and refrigeration specialists are trying to solve by making innovative proposals in the design, operation, assessment and management of our refrigeration equipment. This file covers the following topics: assessing sources of energy savings - the dairy-products sector; energy efficiency and the environment; innovative refrigeration technologies to reduce environmental impacts; considerations on the eco-efficiency of supermarket refrigeration plants in Germany.
