Remote monitoring and quality management throughout the cold chain.

Summary

Continuous and ubiquitous quality management along the supply chain for refrigerated foods from the manufacturer to the consumer is of crucial importance. Tracing, tracking and proper control of the whole food cold chain can guarantee a high-quality end product but this complex task needs a reliable and scaleable technology capable to embrace the entire chain. The architecture for total cold chain control comprises a diversity of local remote monitoring and control systems, various sensors, control mechanisms and different communication methods. Such a complex IT solution requires the
involvement of a powerful technology which is simultaneously, flexible, scaleable and open for convenient integration with any existing infrastructures. This paper outlines, therefore, a number of promising features of the Open Service Gateway (OSGi) technology as a suitable means for managing the chilled and frozen food supply chains.
