Summary

Natural working fluids, such as ammonia, butane and propane, are among the most important long-term (H)CFC alternatives. While the technical aspects of their application are relatively well known, the dominant concern related to their application is safety, due to their flammable and toxic nature. The article addresses the safety aspects of the current and future application of ammonia and hydrocarbons. Using evidence from accident records, the risks and causes of accidents are discussed, and progress in the development of safety regulation and standards is considered.
