The paper is a status report on chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) and hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) alternatives from a 1997 perspective. In different sections, it deals with the status of CFCs, of CFC alternatives, of HCFCs, of HCFC alternatives, which in the United States are HFCs, and, finally, alternatives to HFCs. A historical perspective is presented, and arguments why and under what circumstances HFCs should be accepted as permanent replacements to CFCs and HCFCs are presented.
