Summary

The authors examine the functions of the refrigerant in a vapour compression refrigeration system. They highlight the characteristics of specific thermal load, exergy, specific volume cooling power and operating pressures. Applying these to ammonia, R12 and R11 over a range of conditions, they conclude that ammonia is the most efficient. The system could be applied to other fluids. D.W.H.
