Subjective thermal comfort in railway vehicles.

Summary
Testing and evaluation of the climatic situation is investigated on preseries vehicles, e.g. in a climatic wind tunnel. The present standards and requirements only treat single parameters such as air temperature, surface temperature, air humidity and air velocity, but for the thermal sensation of humans the coaction of all these parameters is decisive. Furthermore, neither the changes of the climatic situation during operation nor the subjective sensation of the passengers is taken into account in the requirements. In a research project performed by Arsenal Research, the real thermal situation of selected railway vehicles in everyday regular service has been investigated. In an in-field measuring campaign, data on the subjective thermal sensation of the passengers were collected with a questionnaire, which included statements about the person, purpose of the journey, satisfaction, service and thermal sensation; data on the objective thermal comfort were collected using measurements (with a comfort meter). All single parameters influencing thermal comfort and the characteristic comfort values (predicted mean vote and predicted percentage of dissatisfied users) suggested by Fanger and used in ISO standard 7730 were recorded. These data and the correlation of subjective and objective thermal comfort were analysed. The capability and quality of these kinds of analyses and exemplified results are presented.
