Trade-off between flammability and performance of hydrocarbon-flame suppressant mixtures as refrigerants.

Summary

A new method for comparing refrigerants has been developed and applied to the trade off between flammability and performance of hydrocarbon-flame suppressant mixtures. The new method optimizes the design of a simplified air conditioning system to minimize cost while meeting a capacity and efficiency constraint. The system with the lowest cost is the better refrigerant. The results indicate that the 5% reduction in system cost due to the higher performance of R290 is not large enough to make up for 30% additional costs associated with additional safety measures required for a flammable refrigerant.
