Summary

A survey on the main issues prompting technical innovation in refrigerating installations for retail sales. Problems arising from the phase-out of R502 can be solved by using either R22 (together with measures for lowering the discharge temperature of compressed gas) or a suitable blend of refrigerant (azeotropic or near-azeotropic) similar to R502. The search for higher energy efficiency has led to more sophisticated refrigerating circuits than those used in the past: two-stage cycles, cascade cycles with condensers cooled by water, in the low-stage, cycles with mechanical subcooling of condensate, capacity control by inverters or through multiple uneven compressors.
