Summary

Practical tests have been carried out on two near-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures developed as drop-in replacements for R502 in existing equipment. These are blends of R125, R290 and R22. The first was tested in several cube ice machines designed for R502 containing hermetic compressors, air-cooled condensers and capillary tubes or expansion valves. The tests indicated a small increase in ice production using the same power, but with a slightly higher discharge temperature than R502. The second, tested in a supermarket display cabinet, showed almost identical performance at both -40 and -30 deg C evaporation, but with a small increase in power at the lower temperature. Leakage tests indicate no significant changes in percentages of constituents. A third refrigerant blend of R125, R143a and R134a is recommended for zero ozone depletion. D.W.H.
