CFC phase-out from commercial refrigeration in the retail food sector.

Summary

On behalf of Australian supermarkets, the author is pleading for government understanding and assistance. The fears expressed are that no truly appropriate replacement refrigerants exist for R502 in the low temperature systems used in Australian supermarkets, and that supplies of any new refrigerant and equipment from overseas will not be available in Australia at an affordable price during the CFC phase-out period. It is also felt unreasonable that end users should be expected to pay the total price for CFC substitution while suppliers and manufacturers can only profit. Clearly a further change from R22 to a totally benign refrigerant in the near future will bring a repeat situation. D.W.H.
