Summary
A UK manufacturer of display cases is researching new refrigerants. Secondary refrigerants are discussed, glycol and calcium chloride, and a silicon oil for low temperature applications. Another option is a mixture of ethanol, salts and water at present on trial in a Swiss supermarket. As primary refrigerants, propane and a propane/isobutane mixture have been compared with R134a and R404A. Discharge pressures decrease, running times are similar, case temperatures are satisfied and the propane/isobutane mixture showed a lower energy consumption than R134a. D.W.H.
