The CFC issue: what impact upon a chiller selection?

Type of article: Article

Summary

For short term owners who build and then on-sell, it seems that the centrifugal chiller running on R123 is the most economical option but for the long term owner it seems that the economical characteristics of the screw chiller running on R134a is the better option. The costs used and derived in this comparison exercice relate to the specific data presented to the manufacturers. The similarity in the analysis results for each chiller option strengthens the view that chillers should not be selected from a catalogue. A chiller selection process must consider the needs of the owner and take into account all costs of ownership such as low load performance, maintenance and availability. Over a ten-year period the impact of the initial capital cost on the total cost of ownership becomes an almost insignificant factor. A value judgement or "life cycle cost" analysis should be carried out before any chiller is purchased.
