Summary
The F-Gas Regulation in the European Union (EU) has established a series of step-downs in EU Hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) consumption. Due to that, new refrigeration systems using very-low Global Warming Potential refrigerants (GWP<150) like hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) or transcritical CO2 have been developed. In this work, based on a real case study, we compare the performance, the life cycle cost and the total emissions of several solutions in the commercial refrigeration applied to a supermarket with a total cooling capacity of 190 kW. The comparison includes traditional HFC systems, low GWP systems and very-low GWP HFO systems and other available solutions (transcritical CO2, propane with glycol loop…). To perform a fair comparison, the ambient temperature and the energy cost for three major European cities were taken into consideration in the calculations. While traditional HFCs are very efficient, HFOs came out as the solution emitting the lowest total emissions over a 10-year lifetime.
