Summary
The authors discuss the effect of the use of R134a as a substitute for R22 in precisely defined refrigerating units of water chillers. The thermodynamic properties of the two refrigerants are reviewed, the heat exchange coefficients are calculated for the equivalent exchangers, the effect on the compressor, of which the piston displacement should be increased by 50%, is examined. Other components of the cycle and the oil problem are investigated, and the predicted performance for this refrigerant change is given in the form of detailed tables for different situations.
