Summary

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES A TRANSPORT TRIAL IN WHICH ONIONS GROWN IN TASMANIA WERE SHIPPED TO EUROPE, IN A VOYAGE LASTING NINE WEEKS. THE ONIONS, PACKED IN NET BAGS, WERE STOWED ON A SLATTED WOODEN FLOOR IN A GENERAL-PURPOSE FREIGHT CONTAINER FITTED WITH AN EXHAUST FAN, AND WERE FORCE-VENTILATED AT A RATE OF 30 CHANGES PER HOUR, THROUGHOUT THE VOYAGE. ONION TEMPERATURES WERE FOUND TO FOLLOW CLOSELY CHANGES IN AMBIENT TEMPERATURE, AND AT OUTTURN THE ONIONS WERE REPORTED TO BE HARD, WITH NEGLIGIBLE DAMAGE ATTRIBUTABLE TO TRANSPORT. THE TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS HAS BEEN 4.5%.
