Summary

This paper reviews and evaluates the application of screw compressors for compressing natural refrigerants, which include but are not limited to carbon dioxide (R744), water vapor (R718), ammonia (R717) and hydrocarbon refrigerant (R290 /R600a). NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system has high ratio of energy using, excellent performance and safety, while it calls for optimization of compressor design and refrigeration system configuration to adopt screw compressors in high power unit. Water vapor screw
compressors are promising for desalination, industrial heat recovery and heat pumps. R290 has similar properties with R22 in refrigeration systems, thus is applicable as working media where screw compressors are usually employed. Each of the application above are given recent research progress, cases and analysis.
