Summary

The reduction program for CFC use and production established by the EPA in the USA will soon propose further acceleration. This is prompted by the success to date which has brought about reductions three years ahead of the original Protocol agreement. There have however been some opposing statements from the White House regarding air pollution emissions. The same article also reports on three new refrigeration technologies, the development of the sonic, or acoustic, compressor, the use of thermoacoustic refrigeration, and Malone cooling which involves the expansion of a liquid, particularly water. The sonic compressor could be offered as a drop-in replacement to existing machines with a change to a non-CFC refrigerant. D.W.H.
