What price planning ahead?

Summary
HCFC's are banned for new equipment in 2000 with a complete phase-out by 2015. This leaves equipment operators with a choice between retrofitting existing R12 container refrigerating equipment with R134a or R22. The former is at present more popular but there are some concerns about the greenhouse effect if using it. Blends are generally unpopular because of possible leakage problems, and the variety of lubricating oils for R134a may yet cause operational problems. Retrofitting costs are an important factor and R22 which can operate on mineral oil is possibly a more economic choice but with a possible earlier than planned phase-out, it could be a more expensive choice in the end.
