Summary
In any recovery of refrigerant for re-use there is the potential for serious contamination, frequently cross contamination from one plant to another. This occurs mainly through the oil recovered with the refrigerant. If the holding vessel on the recovery unit is used to hold, then recharge at least part in vapour form, oil will be left behind. This will contain acid and other contaminants which will mix with the next charge recovered. Contamination is also possible from the recovery unit compressor through moist air admission via leaks when under vacuum. The author analyses these points and more, in simple terms, and suggests improved service techniques which may avoid them. Essential knowledge for service technicians. D.W.H.
