How to successfully adapt a CFC-12 system to HFC-134a.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The decision to change a system from R12 to R134a should be taken only if the system can no longer be run successfully on the old refrigerant. The article covers briefly the steps involved in such a change. These start with the removal of mineral oil and its replacement by a polyol ester specified by the compressor manufacturer. Still using the existing refrigerant, the compressor is run for 48 hours, the oil drained, replaced, and the compressor run again. The R12 is then removed following regulations for recovery or reclamation. A further oil change is followed by replacing any incompatible controls, filter-driers, moisture indicators, etc, then thorough evacuation down to 250 microns before R134a is charged. D.W.H.
