Accuracy analysis of existing thermodynamic models for new refrigerants applied to heat pump systems.

Summary

The paper provides a review of computer software packages used for prediction of thermodynamic properties of refrigerant mixtures in refrigeration and heat pump systems. Thermodynamic properties of alternate refrigerants R404A, R407C and R507 predicted by the program RTRP, which is based upon the REFPROP subroutines, have been compared to those given by the manufacturers software. Computer programs by AlliedSignal, DuPont, ICI, Elf Atochem and Solvay were used to generate 95% confidence intervals for the properties and cycles studied. The paper examines the basic thermodynamic properties of refrigerant mixtures. The thermodynamic properties at a given temperature and pressure generated by the Carnahan-Starling-Desantis equations were found to fall within the 95% confidence interval for the three refrigerants studied. When they were examined within a heat pump cycle, however, it was found that cycle parameters did not always fall within the desired confidence interval.
