Air circulation: how to cope with this critical point.

Summary

The design of a chiller greatly affects the air flow pattern within; so far, however, this question has been dealt with by trial and error alone. Measurement tools and simulation techniques which can help to better manage this critical point are presented. The basis of computational fluid dynamic calculations, which are presently used at research level to simulate air circulation in industrial plants, are presented and the possibilities of this technique are illustrated from a few examples. From a qualitative point of view, the flow structure is well calculated. Moreover, the accuracy of the calculations is good enough to identify deficiencies of ventilation and to investigate the effect of design and working changes.
