Summary
The paper presents the results of experience of using an open air cycle system for freezing food in a rotary freezer. The system has two stages of compression, a recuperator and an ice capture vessel. The first stage is electrically driven and the second stage uses the power output of the expansion turbine. Heat is rejected to cooling water. Experience with the system showed that the secondary fluid used for heat transfer in the recuperator needed to have a freezing point of less than -80°C and that water vapour entering the system in the open freezer would block the recuperator unless an ice capture system was used.
